Fresh from viewing the film and prior to pre-ordering it on Region 1 DVD, I have been allowed to review the Visual Guide. These are not cheap books so does this one really offer a value-for-money visual guide to this quite stunning film?
The first third of the book is an interview with the creator and mastermind Joss Whedon who goes through some of the history and various technical stuff. Whilst this is interesting and entertaining, it's probably not that much different from content that is readily available on the various forums on the Internet. There's limited repeat play for this kind of stuff so it boils down to what you want from this books other than that. Interspersed, there are pictures from the film mostly publicity rather than stills and the quality is good. Also included are Joss' 'Me-mos', very personal notes about how the film is expected to develop. If you like Whedon's jokey style then you will enjoy these.
The second two-thirds of the book are taken up by the shooting script so it's a good idea to actually see the film before you get the book (I know that's logical). Included in the pages is some very nice artwork which shows off the Serenity universe and film stills again. Other items, for example, include the artwork for Inara's costume and some delightful pictures of Reavers in all their grisly glory. The script is what you would expect and don't you be learning all them lines y'hear. I'm going to refer to it again to see if I can find that Chinese cursin'.
If you've purchased these kinds of books before then you know what to expect. I think I'd be more inclined to get hold of the Serenity graphic novels and wait for the DVD. However, as the fans say the more interest in the film the better and hopefully this will find some space on the bookshelves and generate some wider interest in the DVD release.
