I rarely prejudge by names but when I first came across the name 'Paul Gulacy' when much younger, it instantly said 'artist' which indeed he is. Strongly influenced by the art of Jim Steranko, Gulacy made his entrance on the comicbook scene on Marvel's 'The Hands Of Shang-Chi: Master Of Kung Fu' where not only did he bring in early photo-realism but most of the cast's appearances were based on movie stars.

When I first got hooked on Gulacy's art, I always remembered him as the artist who brought arteries and veins to his characters' arms. Considering his reliance on studying photographs for his characters - his interest in Bruce Lee films had him photograph frames from said films - this shouldn't be that surprising. His use of chiaroscuro - contrasting light and dark - made him a classic for his film noir look used in his comicbooks.

This book not only looks at his MoKF art but also when he moved to DC and illustrated Batman and Catwoman as well as his independent comics work which includes a James Bond story. Just to show that he doesn't just work in black and white, there is a massive selection of covers and colour art here. Chances are if you are a Gulacy fan, then you probably own quite a selection of the work here already. So why buy this book? Well, would you trust your collection to others even in your own home? Probably not. It makes more sense to buy this book and let them look through this one instead. Enjoy already.
