I got sent this Official Companion to Season Two of 'Battlestar Galactica' as I started watching the DVD of the series for the first time. This gave me the unexpected pleasure of reading the episode guides as I watched the episodes and it was a very enjoyable experience.
As can be seen by my review of the series itself elsewhere in this month's 'Nest, I can't say enough good things about this show. I love the deep moral ambiguities, the tense visceral action and the flawed characters forced to make difficult decisions at every turn. For me, it doesn't get much better than this for quality Science Fiction in any format.
As I review the series elsewhere here, I won't go into too much detail about the show itself. What does the Official Companion, written by David Bassom add to the show?
Much of the detail in this companion is from the writing team with much smaller sections for effects, music, costume and the like, while there are some pretty photos, in-depth looks at how the look of a ship or set was designed will not be found here. The spotlight is rightly focused on the sterling work made by the writers.
The most impressive detail revealed in these liner notes for each episode is how fluid and accepting Ron Moore and David Eick, the producers, creators and story editors of the show are. If an idea for a new design, new character arc or improvisation came up and worked, it would be used. Similarly, the book tells a great tale of how things that might have been were not chosen and for the right reasons.
The overwhelming feeling on 'Battlestar Galactica' is that this is a team that knows what they are doing. This book certainly confirms that. The Official Companion is an interesting read for someone who enjoys the show but isn't an essential. A bigger, more graphic and on-set edition might be an improvement but this remains an interesting aside to a stupendous series.
