I've seen some of Spanish illustrator Luis Royo's art when I was in a position to visit media shops. To suddenly open a book package for review and find the nice people at NBM to send me a copy was a nice reminder why I got into reviewing in the first place. The book might be small in length but it shows a remarkable versatility from this artist.
You'll note in the opening paragraph I classed Luis Royo as an illustrator. This is mostly because the content of this book isn't just paintings but goes across the range of pastel, ink and wash and possibly charcoal as well. He even goes as far as to show work in development as simple sketches as well.
The theme of this book is more dark gothic than anything, mostly to accommodate the brief but uncredited story within about an apprentice to a painter with a perchance to covering his paintings in black paint. Not a story you want to read in the bright light of day but curled up in bed at the dead of night. Brrrr!
The nubile women are likely to please male fantasy art lovers but there is also some selection for the female fantasy art lovers as well. In other words, there's something for everyone here.
It's rather interesting how Royo can move from seemingly sketch up to near photo-realistic without loosing a beat. Looking at these pictures close-up will make you wonder if he got scars, wounds, etc from real life to put on these characters. Whatever, he shows a real talent for making his pictures come to life and is worth looking at this one or some of his back catalogue available from NBM. I hope some of the page samples here will encourage you to look further.
