This is the second in a series of 'Deathstalker' books. I think one should read the first book initially as this brings together the main characters in this book and explains how they acquired their super-hero powers.
This is a very broad canvas with the story of a galaxy-spanning empire which has become corrupt and holds down its population with an iron fist.
The characters we first met in the earlier book, including Lord Owen Deathstalker - an outlawed nobleman and Hazel d'Ark - an ex-pirate, are leading a revolt against the Empress Lionstone XIV also known as 'the Iron Bitch'. This book opens as they seek help from a world called Mistworld against the empire.
The activities of the many characters weave in and out of each other as the empire tries to rebels but, by and large, they struggle out of the traps set for them. The war expands and as well as human foes, there are now also aliens to deal with.
The book is full of action and if you have read and enjoyed the earlier book I am sure you will enjoy this one. Whilst the storylines are complex, my only criticism is that overall it starts to feel like a re-write of the first book even though it does achieve a definite ending. There are several more books in the series and it may be that they will become repetitious but for the time being if you like a space agent action fantasy this is a good read.
