It's a consequence of reviewing is that we invariably see one aspect of a film before another and with us, its having a copy of the soundtrack first. This doesn't hurt in itself because there are people out there who buy soundtracks solely because they like to own soundtracks and good music is still good music even when it isn't connected to the film.
Animated films depend more on musical cues but there's also a longer lead in time in getting what the director wants for the mood of his production. In this case, it is the origin of DC Comics' 'Justice League Of America'. Not set in the current day but back in the early 60s when they were originally formed. Composer Kevin Manthei uses classic musical tones rather then period music so essentially makes this soundtrack ageless.
Although it would be impossible to hum any melody here, from the sleeve notes, Manthei was determined to give some grace and elegance to not only the proceedings but the characters as well. As such, this CD becomes very pleasant listening with hints of Christopher Franke and John Williams in themes related to space. Whether that was intentional or my good ear would depend on what you yourself make of this work. Even if you aren't a comicbooks fan, this music is on par with any music given to live-action and a pleasant way to spend an hour.
I should point out the sleeve notes are an extensive twelve page booklet with comments not only from Mathei but also producer Michael Goguen with stacks of illustrations from the film. The CD is nicely decorated with super-heroes which will surely make it a collectible item for comic fans, especially as it highlights Green Lantern, a DC character who is long over-due to get in the lamp light.
