It is time for the TARDIS to go to the heart of a problem. Once again, its wonky circuits land the team of Doctor Eight and Lucie Millar right at the heart of a mystery. Somehow, you get the increasing feeling that the Doctor is never in charge of his dynamic, living machine.
Lucie's still along for the ride. Fresh from the fun and games of 'Maximum Warp', she is unprepared for the village that time forgot. When the two of them arrive at Thorington in Suffolk they are not surprised to find the tide is out. They are surprised to find that the corner shop only has empty tins on its shelves. The proprietor, Jason Taylor, thinks that Lucie might be there to replace his daughter, Sally, who has left home. Today is Sunday so the paper round must be completed and Jason dutifully picks up the papers from people's doorsteps and puts the money on the step so they can come to him tomorrow to buy it again. After all, tomorrow will be Sunday and so will the rest of the days that follow.
The Doctor accompanies the local bobbie, PC Sharp, as they decide to investigate the disappearance of Sally from the shop but he cannot make the officer understand that the sea is missing from the bay and just who are the people in the tank heading across the sand?
This is one of my favourite kinds of story, with a mixture of teasing inspirations and a mystery at the heart of it which is satisfactorily and surprisingly solved. The cast which includes Derek Griffiths, Adrian Dunbar and Nick Wilton throw themselves into it as ever. A little bit of Phil K. Dick and some cold-war paranoia are matched up with some bang up-to-date concerns and a menace the Doctor has encountered before.
It's an entertaining listen with cliff-hangers, curiosities and calamity. Just another day at the office for the Doctor and Lucie. For a change it is quite a compassionate story and the details of the life of the Sunday village are skilfully brought to life.
The drama was written by Jonathan Clements who gets to explain how it all came about on the cover notes. The extras are entertaining as usual and empathises the fun the actors have in the sound booths.
Quality drama at affordable prices. If only some of the TV companies had such high standards.
