Take three blokes and some nice engines. Add an interplanetary system and you've got Maximum Warp, BBC TV's car programme 'Top Gear' by any other galaxy. The ultimate bloke-bore-fest is all about star drives and there is a hint of Douglas Adams when a hot-rod spaceship crashes into the local sun. The non-accidental death of test pilot Tim the Ferret (gerrit?) is a space murder mystery.
Enter the Doctor (Paul McGann, Number Eight) and Lucie Millar who decide to probe into the mysterious death, donning the hats of intergalactic investigators. This latter day Mr. and Mrs. Marple are scrupulous in their investigations and Lucie is placed mole-like into the Maximum Warp Show as the new girl presenter.
A full in homage to 'Top Gear', this is an exuberant over-the-top story which makes no bones about where it got its inspiration. The voices of the three presenters are spot on in mimicking the presentational skills of the TG team. The strangely attractive James Fleet voices O'Reillly the strangely not-attractive car-bore who Lucie must endure endless conversations in her new role.
Also featuring in this tale are an ex-intergalactic enemy that may or may not start a war. This sponge-based life-form may be responsible for Timbo's murder but will have to be squeezed to tell the truth.
Casting is inspired. The above mentioned James Fleet is joined by Graeme Garden, and Duncan James (that's the ex-Blue singer, ladies), an enthusiastic convert to Big Finish Productions. The usual team are on top form as ever smoothly producing the verbal banter they excel at. Its amusing, entertaining and sponge-based life-forms everywhere should enjoy it.
As imitations are the sincerest form of flattery, I hope the 'Top Gear' presenters are impressed that their fame has spread galaxy-wide.
