With the return of the real Jamie McCrimmon in 'The Jigsaw War', we get something that is unusual for him, he has to use his brain. Usually more of a brawny child who gets taken along for the ride, here Jamie has to figure out just what is going on if he is to save his own life and win his freedom.

He's a prisoner and his interrogator, Moran (Dominic Mafham), is keen to find out how much Jamie knows about the non-human inhabitants of the world he and the Doctor have arrived on. But Jamie is not experiencing time in a linear way and it's not just him and the guard in his prison. It seems there are four people here just not four bodies. As the Doctor and the mysterious Side converse through Jamie and Moran, we feel the constant displacement and uncertainty that Jamie experiences. It certainly makes Jamie and us work hard for the outcome.

Once again Fraser Hines does a great job of reproducing the tones of the Second Doctor and he gets to play off a second character and I guess a third in Side which must have made his head spin a little.

This is one of those stories that does your head in a bit the first time round and, although it's clever, it's not one of my favourites. I guess I just prefer my Jamie to be running around and shouting, 'Look at the size of that, Doctor'. I know, shallow.
