Space Bastards

The way the web has moved on from the flat HTML desert the Science Fiction Crowsnest set up shop in 1995 no doubt shocks you as much as it sometimes does us.

Here's an excellent example of the way things have moved on, a couple of really good space shoot-em-ups - Space Invaders with mondo attitude.

It was the kind of thing that five years ago would have been science fiction in its own right, if you'd expected to be able to download free games of this kind of quality over the Web.

Space Bastards is one of the best of breed among the hundreds of Space Invader-like clones that have sprung up on the Net. The images, music and sounds slap you in the mush like a cold kipper.

Zapping the alien mothership wins you some major power-ups in the form of guns that would make a Terminator blush with embarrassment.

You can play two-player with a joystick or keyboard.

However, if you want an original arcade blast-them-up, then Phobia II is a free PC game a simple premise ... if it moves, it dies.

You're being harried by insect-like aliens who given the chance will make you into a Scooby snack. Run, run and run some more, in between zapping everything that moves.

If you get through a couple of levels, you'll find bonus powers and more powerful guns (an Uzi or Napalm Squirter). You can play in two-player mode with keyboard controls.
