X-Men X-Travaganza

I have an uncle who - having started his comic collection in the 60s - has an enviable collection of big name early titles... including the first couple of hundred editions of the X-Men (not to mention the Fantastic Four, Conan, The Incredible Hulk etc etc).

The value of his collection is no-doubt about to go through the roof with the Stateside release of the new X-Men movie ... something I applaud given that I'm, in the frame to inherit said collection.

For those who aren't comic book fans, the X-Men are a super-hero group working in an alternative reality current day whose powers are the result of mutated DNA. As well as the normal super villain punch-ups, there's plenty of racial commentary with the normal humans fear of mutants - and various state-sponsored concentration camp story-lines etc.

The forthcoming movie has a very interesting line up of stars including Professor X (Patrick Stewart - alias Trek's Captain Picard), Jean Grey (Famke Janssen - alias a certain 'I need to kill you to get an orgasm' Bond baddie), Cyclops (James 'Resovoir Dogs' Marsden), Storm (Halle Berry) and Wolverine (Hugh 'Kung Fu star' Jackman).

The Fox film - due to hit the US in July - also offers has a big round-up of mutant nasty chaps including Magneto (Ian McKellen), Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos) and Sabretooth (Tyler Mane).

Let's hope it's enough to break the 'Curse of Marvel'.

There's two big US comic publishers - DC and Marvel. But while DC have had all the Hollywood success with the likes of Burton's Batman and the Superman series, Marvel have produced flop after miserable flop.

I mean, can anyone tell me who starred in the ill-fated Captain America movie, or the Spiderman film. Sorry Stan, but when it comes to the big screen, DC - like the devil - has played all the best tunes to date.

The X-Men is Marvel's first tier series, the jewel in their crown. If they can't make some movie magic with this puppy then - let's face it - they can't make it anywhere.

So why are we telling you all this before the movie has launched?

Well, the first movie trailer for the upcoming X-Men film has now been up-loaded to the official Web site. It's early days yet, and we wouldn't like to make a judgment from the trailer alone, but perhaps this movie might break the curse of Stan Lee.

You peeps out there in user land can get your first glimpses of the film version of the comic mutant heroes over at http://www.x-men-the-movie.com/
