Space,
the expensive frontier
If you have ever read the Drudge report and marveled at their sensitive
(not) handling of political news, you'll love this little gem -
an independent source of news and gossip on the space exploration
world ... mainly NASA and the North American side of things.
It's SpaceRef, run by Marc Boucher, an online vet for the Mars
Society, and Keith Cowing, the ex-NASA staffer who also owns the
infamously independent NASAWatch web site.
NASAwatch has such proclamations on its pages as: 'This is not
a NASA Web site. You might learn something' as well as a clarion
call to steal NASA back from the hands of the pen-pushing bureaucrats
stifling the noble dreams of the 1960s.
SpaceRef is only slightly less offensive to those NASA suits who
take themselves far too seriously, aiming to portal up news and
other NASA (mis)doings, as well as offering all the usual Crowsnest-like
features ... space-focused site directories etc.
As you'd imagine, they've had a field day recently with all the
martian ships crash and burning around the red planet. Keith's sources
at NASA are excellent, given that much of the agency feels as disillusioned
with the red tape and budget cuts as he does.
There's literally 1000s of staffers at NASA who are only too glad
for the opportunity to grass up the bungling bean counters running
the circus now.
We can have no higher praise than to say if we were going to produce
a space-exploration-crowsnest.com, it would look a lot like Marc
and Keith's honest efforts.
