Trekking on - more on the last days of Trek

Our inside source at Paramount, DT, continue to dish the dirt on what's going on in the world of Trek.

It seems likely that obsessive Barclay may appear with Troi again (oh Troi, Troi, can you feel my pain?). The last episode which featured Barclay's mania, was the one where he is back on Earth, working with the Federation science team trying to work out how to contact Voyager and bring her back home.

His obsessive behavior over contacting Voyager, and his holo-addiction, made for a good episode. But haven't all the addiction issues already been dealt with? Still, with the right handling, this could be a good episode.

There's a time jumping episode too, where Chakotay has to go back to DS9 and interact with Janeway before she left the Alpha quadrant (who of course is in hot pursuit of terrorist - or freedom fighter - Chakotay, at this time).

The danger of these time travel stories is that you can do anything - kill the entire crew etc - then make it all right again by hacking a little history. They get to be a bit too '… then he woke up and it was all a dream' for our tastes.

Fans have already launched a 'save the doctor' campaign, since it was revealed that all his 'brothers' in the fleet have been decommissioned, and that this is everyone's favourite hologram's likely fate on returning to Earth too.

Also, apparently, Q is going to appear towards the end of the final Voyager series. We have to say, we were very disappointed by the very last STTNG episode which was also a Q-feature.

The problem with someone as powerful as Q is that it takes Deus Ex Machina episodes to a whole new level, and it's a rare writer that's talented enough to handle that kind of material while still dishing an interesting plot.

The two-hour finale for the series is tentatively slotted in for May 23 2001, so let's say a quick prayer that this at least, will be thoroughly Q-less. Seven years is a long time for a series to run, and we can end Voyager far better without that contradictory god-like clown making another boring appearance.

The two new replacement series for Voyager are now, sadly, looking likely to be delayed by the various strike actions being planned by the script writers and actors in Hollywood.

There was talk of accelerating the pre-production plans to beat the strike, but one of the Paramount grand fromages thought that the fans would appreciate a little breather; plus it'd give Paramount a chance to wet the appetite with some marketing teasers (absence makes the heart grow fonder, and all that).

The fate of Voyager is now leaning heavily towards the 'get back home safely' camp, since it was leaked that a couple of the characters from Voyager might well have walk-ons in the next STTNG movie (more specifically, a certain Borg cutie).

This is the same Romulan-war themed movie where Deanna Troi and Commander Riker will break the hearts of male and female fans alike, when they finally get hitched at the end of the film.

More from Deep Throat, when we can sneek into Paramount's underground car park next month

I don't know why the Crowsnest gang seems so fixated on Troi. Personally speaking, I think she's really looking her age in the last few movies. She looks like someone's granny.

Jamie Close. 02/02/2001
Hey, my granny looks like Seven of Nine, does anyone want her number?

Jennifer Campbell. 02/02/2001
Get a life, boys.

Jamie Close. 02/02/2001
I'm a Trek fan, if I wanted a life I would have got a job as a Porsche-driving trader in Wall Street.

John Preston. 02/02/2001
Wow .. they pay you to drive Porsches around Wall Street? Now that's a job.

John. 02/02/2001
You hated "All Good Things?" Gimme a break! 2nd best episode of the season (after Lower Decks).

Therri M. 02/02/2001
Hey. I LIKE that contradictory god-like clown. He's the only thing that kept TNG from getting boring, and I liked the episode where he gets close to fathering a messiah. The fact that he has a sense of humor doesn't detract from the fact that Q is trying to be a nice god-like entity even if he went about it the wrong way.

Michael E 02/02/2001
Hey...Troi's a babe. The only ST convention I've ever been to featured her. I love that accent!

El Bastardo 06/02/2001
More of Barclay is cool but forget Q, For a godlike being he has aged too fast, Just like Data!!!

Krekelberg, LCDR 06/02/2001
I wouldn't mind being Q-less for the remainder of the series.... and I'd like to see them all arrive safely back on earth -- including Tom & Belana's new baby!

Aragorn 21/02/2001
Uhm...Anyone think about New Frontier? ::gets odd looks:: Guess not...
