Another
blast from the past from Paper Tiger.
This is a selection of Boris' paintings from the pre-90s.
The format is a little confusing in that on the reverse side of each painting,
there is a small black and white version and the title.
However, considering that this is a portfolio, the reader may want
to dissect this book for pictures to go on the wall. This is more
apparent from the fact that the paper isn't truly gloss but more
a matt so doesn't reflect so much.
Although
it might not be a true portfolio - and before you ask, yes, I do have a limited
Boris one of those - it's probably the next best thing.
Of
the art, there are several classics including 'Tattoo' - the one
with the dragon coming out of a man's arm - amongst the selection.
It's rather odd looking at
some of Boris' early works having seen so much of his recent work. Whether this
earlier commercial work was made under stricter editorial control, time constraint
or what, many of them are more illustrative than the current photo-realistic that
Vallejo currently strives for. This doesn't degrade the work and there's
sufficient choice to please all you Boris fans. The added bonus is that each picture
fills a page. If you do plan on splitting the book up for your wall, don't
forget to buy a second for prosperity. GF Willmetts
