Moon, Elizabeth (Elizabeth Moon)

Elizabeth Moon, a name that makes you think of lunar landscapes or interstellar voyages, doesn't disappoint. A veritable Swiss Army knife of the sci-fi and fantasy realm, she combines military prowess with a dash of biology and politics. Let's take a whimsical tour through the galaxies and medieval lands she’s crafted.

The Paksenarrion series began with 'The Sheepfarmer’s Daughter'. Don’t let the bucolic title mislead you. It's not about frolicking lambs. It’s more "how does a sheepfarmer's daughter end up with a sword in her hand, leading battalions?" The answer? Just read the series. And if you thought she stopped with 'Oath of Gold', think again. 'The Legacy of Gird' continues the tale before we embark on the 'Paladin's Legacy or Legend of Paksenarrion'. The sheer volume of books that fall under the Paksenarrion umbrella is enough to make one think of Tolkien on a spacefaring binge.

Next up, we have Familias Regnant universe, or as it’s colloquially known, 'Game of Thrones in Space'. We journey with Heris Serrano, a space opera heroine who'd give any Stark or Lannister a run for their money. Then there’s Esmay Suiza, a continuation to the Serrano tales, making one wonder just how vast this universe really is.

Moon's Vatta's War might make you think of interstellar trade wars and politics. Surprise, surprise, it is! Though I’d recommend not discussing 'Trading in Danger' with a Wall Street broker; they might just take notes.

And then there's Planet Pirates. Collaborating with none other than Anne McCaffrey, this is a space piratical adventure. Can you say "Arrrrrr" in zero gravity? Now, a little birdy (or should we say, a space drone?) mentioned that Elizabeth once served in the United States Marine Corps. Perhaps that's where her nuanced understanding of military strategy comes from? Her credentials also boast of two B.A. degrees – and I must say, it's not often one meets a writer who is as comfortable with history as they are with biology. To wrap it up, if you’ve ever fancied a journey that combines space battles with medieval heroics, told by someone who's likely just as comfortable with a rapier as she is with a computer keyboard, Elizabeth Moon is your galactic tour guide.
